Catholic Charities Executive Team

The following officers compose Catholic Charities' executive team. This team oversees the operations of Catholic Charities with the assistance of a management team made up of the regional service center directors and administrative service directors.

Paul J. Martodam, MPA, Chief Executive Officer

As chief executive officer, Paul J. Martodam oversees the entire Catholic Charities organization and its operations and reports to the corporate Board of Directors. Catholic Charities, formerly Catholic Social Service of Central and Northern Arizona, reported over $30 million in annual revenues in 2006.

Martodam, who joined the agency in 1992 as assistant director, was named chief executive officer in 1993. His prior work experience includes more than 30 years in the nonprofit sector. He was assistant director of administration and director of services to handicapped persons for Catholic Charities, Diocese of St. Cloud, MN. He also served as executive director of the Family Life Office and diocesan director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Crookston, MN.

Martodam is currently a member of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Charities USA and the Arizona Council of Human Service Providers, and is a founding member of the Organization for Nonprofit Executives and Protecting Arizona's Family Coalition. He is a past board member of the Arizona Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services. Martodam earned a bachelor's degree from St. Louis University. He also holds a master's degree in public administration from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN.

Paul and his wife, Linda, have been married for 37 years and have five adult children. Two sons and a daughter reside in Phoenix, one daughter in Flagstaff, and another daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren in Minnesota. They enjoy traveling to different parts of the country to learn more about our nation's history and experience climates, customs, and natural attractions. In his spare time, Paul enjoys doing home improvements.

Kristen J. Schmidt, Ph.D., Chief Operating Officer

As chief operating officer since 1995, Dr. Kristen Schmidt plans, coordinates, and evaluates program operations for Catholic Charities. She directly supervises regional directors and oversees continuous quality improvement and the accreditation process. In addition, Kristen serves as adjunct faculty at Northern Arizona University and Central Arizona Community College.

Kristen has over 25 years of experience working in the psychology and social work fields. Prior to working at Catholic Charities, she was the director for Desert Vista West Behavioral Health Center and the clinical director for Devereux Arizona. Kristen received her Ph.D. in educational psychology from Arizona State University. She also holds master's degrees in educational psychology and social work from ASU, as well as a bachelor's degree in social work.

Dr. Schmidt is married and has two children, a daughter who is a recent NAU graduate and a son at Creighton University.

Sylvia Hopkins, Chief Marketing Officer

As chief marketing officer, Sylvia Hopkins is responsible for marketing, public relations and communications for the organization’s five regional service centers and over 50 programs.  

She has more than 16 years experience in marketing, branding, event planning, sales and development and online marketing.  Prior to joining Catholic Charities, Sylvia served as the vice president of marketing for Childhelp for 13 years.  While there, she led the team in developing brand identification and she was nationally recognized by the United States Congress as well as local lawmakers for creating and developing the annual marketing and fund-raising program, National Day of Hope. 

She has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.  Sylvia is currently a member of the American Marketing Association.

A Scottsdale resident, she enjoys spending time with her two children and is an avid nature/wildlife photographer. 



Robert Brown, MBA , Chief Administrative Officer

As chief administrative officer, Bob is responsible for working with the information systems, finance and human resource departments to strengthen the infrastructure to better support program services and expand Catholic Charities’ mission of helping people in need and providing hope.

He has over 30 years of experience as a C level executive in the technology, finance and health care fields. Bob has successfully reengineered a number of companies from start-ups to larger corporations. Most recently, he served as president and chief operating officer of a start-up company specializing in desktop video conferencing for business and consumer markets.

He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Bonaventure and a Master’s of Business Administration from State University of New York.  

Bob is a member of the Business Advisory Council for the School of Business at St. Bonaventure University and a Board Member for the Franciscan Renewal Center.  A Paradise Valley resident, he enjoys golf and jogging.  He and his wife have six children and eight grandchildren.
